It has been announced that Price Drop TV – the shopping channel – will leave the Freeview platform in early January. Their Freeview contract will expire on the 5th January and they will not be renewing it. Price Drop TV’s sister channel Bid TV will remain on Freeview. Sit-Up – owners of Bid TV and Price Drop TV – was outbid on one of its channel slots earlier this year but they have been mulling over their options since then to decide what to do. They have decided to remove Price Drop TV from Freeview. Price Drop TV will continue on other platforms such as Virgin Media and Sky.
New gaming channel NetPlay TV will launch on Freeview on the 8th January 2009. NetPlay TV will have a 24 hour slot on Freeview on channel 48. The channel will include live bingo and casino-style gambling.
Four new HD channels will be launching on Virgin Media early next year.
HD website HDTV UK is reporting “speaking at the 36th Annual Global Media and Communications conference, Berkett said that it would be launching four new HD channels… over the next three months”.
It’s widely thought two of those four new high definition channels will be ITV HD and Channel 4 HD. Other possibilities for the other two are Sky1 HD and Discovery HD.
At the moment Virgin Media only has one HD channel on its TV platform – BBC HD – and some high definition content available in On Demand. HD is available for anyone with a V+ set top box and an HD ready TV.
Further HD channels are thought to be launching later in 2009.
Following on from our post earlier, media website Digital Spy are now reporting Virgin Media’s plans to launch HD channels and a Virgin Media spokesman told them they’re “in ongoing discussion with a number of broadcasters with regards to new SD and HD channels and are currently evaluating our HD plans for 2009”. History Channel was also renamed recently to History, as was the +1 version of the channel.

Virgin Media TV customers living in ex-Telewest areas of the network will notice Deutsche Welle and Deutsche Welle Radio have been removed from the lineup. Deutsche Welle and Deutsche Welle Radio have never been available in ex-NTL areas of the Virgin Media TV network. The removal of these channels in ex-Telewest areas is part of Virgin’s plan to make the channel lineups in all areas the same by either adding or removing channels that aren’t available everywhere.
Following on from the round of channel number changes recently, there have been some further changes made. Several channels now have different numbers. Please check the Virgin Media channel lineup page for the fully up-to-date channel listings – click here.
The radio station Mojo has been removed from Freeview. Mojo used to be on channel 721 – if you rescan your box you will see the channel is gone.
