American broadcaster CBS will be launching six channels in the UK. This will be the first time it has ever had channels in the UK – it usually just licenses programmes out to other channels. In a deal with Chellomedia, the six new CBS channels should launch on Sky, Virgin Media and Freesat before the end of the year. The new channels will replace the existing Chellomedia-owned Zone channels – Zone Romantica, Zone Thriller, Zone Horror (and the +1 channel) and Zone Reality (and the +1 channel).
The CBS channels will all be CBS branded, but it’s not been confirmed what the channel names will be yet. The new channels will have access to the CBS Studio International back catalogue (Broadcast Now reports this includes “content from CBS Television Studios, CBS Television Distribution, Showtime, CBS News, CBS Films and a library of more than 70,000 hours of programming to more than 200 markets”) which includes Star Trek, Dynasty and possibly such shows as the Late Show With David Letterman and the Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson.
